Everything looks good but not starting
I have a 96 S10 Blazer4.3. Last week while driving home it died on me. I had driven a good 7-8 miles I slowed to allow for traffic in font of me. When I went to give it gas it sputtered and died. My neighbor checked the fuel pressure and it was over 60psi. We checked the rotor and cap and they looked good too. We then checked for spark at the coil and there was.Is there anything else it could be before I take it in and spend $$$ chasing electrical ghosts?

Re: Everything looks good but not starting
How much "over 60 psi" was the fuel pressure? You really need 63 to run a CPFI system.

Re: Everything looks good but not starting
First put a new cap/rotor on no questions to rule it out - aftermarket cheap ones can internally crack/arc and you never see it and get multiple plugs firing at once with a weak spark. After that possible crank sensor ($60.), ign module, or wiring but need a scan tool to really read.

Re: Everything looks good but not starting
Thanks for the replies. I dont know how much higher than 60psi it went or if it even did the gauge I have only goes to 60psi but it didnt drop off that much after cranking.
On the cap and rotor - my neighbor is a mechanic and he looked at them and said they looked good. If its arcing would there be any marks to show thats whats happening? I dont know if its an AC Delco cap/rotor or not i bought used but just to look at it I dont see that it says AC Delco on it. Its a cheap easy fix if thats what it is so I may just go ahead and replace them. Im at the point now where if it isnt the cap and rotor I hope it is the pump at least I know what Im dealing with. Its just wierd that it just died on me and wont even fire I had no symptoms leading up to this. |

Re: Everything looks good but not starting
Just an update on my problem. It ended up being the Distributor cap. I had borrowed a scanner and was all set to go ghost hunting. My brother was over and the 1st thing he did was take the cap completely off. (I )had just loosened it and tilted it back to inspect it. At 1st everything looked good as it was put on brand new from the previous owner about 7 months ago . But upon closer examination in a well lit area he saw a tiny burn mark. A trip to the auto store and 15 min installation of new cap and rotor (AC DELCO) and she roared to life.
Thanks for the help. I only wish I wouldve listened to you guys earlier and just went out and got the new cap and tried it instead of assuming that it wasnt the problem. Again thanks. |
