I have new headliner material for my 86. And I was wondering if anyone could recommend any aeresol adhesives for bonding the new headliner to the headliner foam board. I've tried twice already with 3M Super 77 but after using I noticed that in small letters on the side of the can it said "Not recommened for automotive headliners." So my luck, it fell down again 2 days after I stuck it up there. See with the new headliner I bought its the black felt type material and its bonded to a 1/16'' of grey foam. So its not how it was originially with just the felt material. I have to bond the grey foam to the foam board thats shaped the the roof of the car.
And suggestions? I dont want to stick it up there and have it come down the next day.....again Or get some crap the ends up dissolving the foam. I've heard that 3M makes another adhesive that works well on headliners, but I don't know that it is or where to pick a can of it up at. HELP!! |

Re: 86 Hard Top Headliner problems
3M super trim spray adhesive. I've used it on 2 different headliners and it has yet to let go in these HOT Georgia summers.

Tumbtacs dont works as good as sewing pins. Tumbtacs you have to put straight in thats why they fall out. With the sewing pins you but them in at an angle and they will stay in.

Re: 86 Hard Top Headliner problems
if you use the spray adhesive, spray the headliner board, then the material, then let them sit and get nice and tacky, just leave it for 3 mins or so, then you can put the fabric on the board. beleive me, its all about letting it sit and tack up. i work for a carpet installer, thats how we do it. plus it worked on my headliner.

Re: 86 Hard Top Headliner problems
Yeah, 88's got the ticket, you have to let it get tacky, depends on the humidity level and condiitions, sometimes it takes less but no more than 6-7 minutes. And don't install it in the car that is or has been sitting in direct sunlight either.
Oh, and I prefer the pins that corckscrew in when all else fails. Your ass will thank you 'cause they don't raodomly fall out in your seats |
