97 SC2 Bad transmission

Hi,
I have a 97 SC2 with an automatic transmission. The car has 195000 miles on it. The transmission gave it up. I do not want to spend alot of money on a transmission to put beside an engine with that many miles on it. So what I would like to do is to find a lower milage engine/transmission combo and replace them both. I found a 94 SC2. I know that things changed in the year models but does anyone know if it would work since I am changing out both the engine and transmission? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 97 SC2 Bad transmission

the engine would work if you swaped the 97 manifolds and sensors on. i beleave the transmission will not work due to a difference in gear raitos and electronics, you may want to call a dealership and as a tech to confirm, or try saturnfans.com

Re: 97 SC2 Bad transmission

gear ratios were the same with the mp7 trans throughout that time. the egr on the 94 is a vacuum operated one while your 97 has a electronic egr. the 94 head also has an extra coolant sensor, which isnt a big deal at all it can be left in the head and nothing plugged into it. the biggest problem is the egr. im not certain if the egr mount is the same and can be swapped or not because i havent looked into the vacuum operated egr.

Re: 97 SC2 Bad transmission

as yes i forgot about the EGR, 97 has a electric EGR, 94 had ether a vacuum EGR(federal emissions) or a Electic EGR(cali emissions). the mounting is not the same. the 94 head is designed for a vacuum EGR, with a adaptior plate used for the electronic EGR. with some luck, your donor car may already have the adapter plate. because they are a little costly and hard to come by(i've never seen one for sale or in a junk yard) the dealership may be your only option for this part
