Angry high idle

Ive posted on here when i first got my 1999 rodeo v6 2wd but it has run ok since then. it used to have the symptoms of leaking intake manifold gasket(stalling, high idle, etc) but never got that fixed. Since then the rodeo has run decent but the cel has come on a few times but no stalling. The cel will come on randomly sometimes after months and other time days apart(until i reset it). I had it read and it showed code 0101 but recently the cel hasnt come on but the car seems to idle high somethimes and other time idle fine. Also it seems that if i start it and it idles high then turn it off and start again it idles a little lower. I have noticed lately that there feels like a lot of airflow coming up from the engine if i pop the hood when running. Can someone explain if my car is haunted or any suggestions on what to check? Also i was wondering if i should have it diagnosed at a import/domestic shop or go specificly to an isuzu shop/dealer? Let me know any questions you have so that i can give you any more info you need. thnaks for the help

Re: high idle

I have a simular problem on 96', 3.2 rodeo. Sometimes idles very high 1200-1800 rpm but if key is turned off and restarted a couple of times, idles fine. Sometimes starts fine but then after driving a few miles and stoping at a red light, high idle returns. Replaced EGR valve and cleared code. Replaced IAC valve, TPS and mass airflow. Cleaned throttle body, used throttle body cleaner while engine running to check for vacume leakes Everywhere with no sign of lead anywhere.

Re: high idle

Mine started racing about a month back, it would also shift HARD through all gears (AT). I replaced the TPS and it stoped for about a month, its back. But the TPS is good. About a week ago I noticed if I restarted it, it would idle and shift right most times. I also noticed if I unpluged the TPS the idle would drop and would stay around 500rpm and seems to shift right most times. May run ok for a day maybe a week, maybe only till I shut it off and restarted it. I've changed the TPS, ICV (idle control valve) cleaned the TB and the EGR valve and the computer, but why would unpluging and repluging the TPS reset the idle?????????

Re: high idle

Dude. Been there done that. The replacement TPSs that I tried were from Advance and NAPA. The Advance one lasted several months. The first NAPA was bad out of the box. The next NAPA one lasted 2 weeks. I finally ordered the Isuzu TPS from St. Charles Automotive. The mounting holes are different. It has worked for a week. When the idle was high, live data from my scanner showed the TPS reading high. My symptoms have been EXACTLY as you described. If you go to planetisuzoo.com and look at the drivetrain problems forum, you'll see my thread, "Threw another TPS at it." Where did you get your replacement TPS? How do you know the TPS is good?

Re: high idle

NAPA was where I bought my first TPS. My Rodeo never shifted hard. Everything is normal except for the high idle. Thanks for the help and the link as I don't have much hair left to lose. I will check out the link.

Re: high idle

Hi Guys,
All of the voltages were a little high on the TPS. One of the two holes on my NAPA TPS was smaller than the other which prevented me from adjusting it. I enlarged the smaller whole to the size of the larger one which allowed me to adjust it to the proper voltages. I cleaned Every ground that I could find. Everything seems to be running great. My wife is happy again..... at least with the SUV. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for All of your help. You guys are GREAT.

Re: high idle

Mine has run great since getting the OEM TPS. Hope yours holds out for awhile, too.
