Loud Hummin Sound

I have a 99 cavalier Z24 with a four speed automatic transmission. The situation is when i drive down the road i have a loud humming sound that changes with vehicle speed. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the car. It sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing but i replaced that and the sound is still there so i believe it is in the final drive of the transmission. When i take the weight off of the passenger side of the car (by taking a hard turn) the sound goes away, but when i put weight on it it gets louder, just like a wheel bearing. I don't know how to check the transmission fluid either because it has one of those maintenance free transmissions so if someone can help me with that, that would be great.

yeah that sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing, did you fix it yourself or did you take it somewhere?? either way people make mistakes, it may not have been replaced properly

Re: Loud Hummin Sound

I replaced it myself, i replaced the entire hub so i know i didn't put anything back together wrong, unless the new hub was bad but i find that hard to believe, the hub swap is very simple

Re: Loud Hummin Sound

I have a 2000 Z24 Cavalier with a loud "hummin" sound from the front right. Makes more noise when I turn right. (Left or right bearing ??)

Could someone walk me through changing the hub assembly ?

I'd do it myself, as I'm pretty handy with that stuff...just need a walk though...

Thanks,

Maybe it`is the left side???? or maybe a rear one. certainly sounds like a bad bearing. Down that road 3 or 4 times with two different vehicles. Turn the wheel abit and it unloads the pressure on the bad bearing for a second or so. Just my oh ya on my 2000 sunfire there is a plug on right side of trans ,seen the mech pop it out ,he said if it drips she`s good to go . hope this helps

Re: Loud Hummin Sound

I don't think it's the brake wear pins, as those sound quite different. I'm thinking that it's now from the forward left side. Do I have to get hub assemblies that include the ABS sensor ?

Can I change the wheel bearing/hubs myself ? Or does it require air tools, etc..

Thanks,
