2000 SL and Service Engine Soon light

I have a 2000 SL with 104000 miles, and have never had any problems. In fact, this is our second Saturn.

Yesterday the SES light came on, and stays on. The car is running fine, with discernible problems outside of an occasional high idle, though I am not a mechanic nor do I pretend to know anything other than changing the oil regularly.

Do I need to go to a Saturn dealer to have the codes read, or can indie repair shops do that, as well?

thx
Rich

Lightbulb

this can be due to something simple like air filter or deeper like a sensor fail. take the car to a local shop or purchase a scanner the price of one is about what you would pay a shop for one read. i hear autozone does this for free....no way to guess.

if the car seems to be running fine but with high idle, it could be an idle air control valve. it sometimes can also be caused by the coolant temperature sensor, very common problem throughout saturns. first thing to do is have the code(s) read. go to auto zone and have it checked out, but you can be nice and listen to what they have to say but its normally never close to right. after you get the codes relay them back on here and then things will start flowing much easier as to what the problem is.

saturnspeed_12 is correct if autozone tells you that your o2 sensor is the code dosnt mean thats the main problem example the wire might be bad shorted some place. unless the guy or gal working is knowledgable as well. talk to you later
