Ground controls or springs? need help quick...

tomorrow i am going out and purchases either springs or coilovers.
I was going to get springs but now i ahve been looking inot coilovers.does anybody have coilovers and if so how do you like them, what kind and how much. i was looking at eibach ground controls but they are 320 bucks. any other good brands.
and if i get coilovers then i wont need to get new shocks?

coilovers are the springs and shocks together, and if you get stiff and smaller springs your stock shocks will be working a lot harder to keep up, and even foam up and burst (as I've heard on PH..i mean AF) Whatever you do make sure you read up on suspension systems before you buy anything..there's an article in the Performance FAQ

get coilovers if you plan on raising and lowering your car. remember that you have to get an alignment everytime you change the settings. most the guys i know that have coilovers never change the settings. i have sportlines and AGX shocks. i have had them for a month and so far i love them

well actually, coilovers are NOT the springs and shocks together if you are planning on getting the Ground Control system, that is just a spring with adjustable levels, it does not come with a strut or shock, you are thinking of a fully-adjustable coilover suspension set which would cost much much more (often $900 or more for a good set). But as far as the Ground Controls go, they are one of the best sets of coilovers you can buy for the money, either those or Skunk2's are my favorites as far as total ride. Comparing the coilovers to the springs you will get more noise out of the coilovers, and coilovers will very rarely be a smoother ride than springs. It all depends on how far you drop your car. The more you drop it, the worse your ride is gonna be becuz your putting more pressure on your struts. Either way, if you do lower you car, no matter how much you drop it, you will be buying aftermarket struts pretty soon becuz they are not made to handle the extra pressure that is put on them by lower springs. Keep that in mind with your purchase.

I'd just like to throw out that Si2000Vtec has Skunk2 coils and has been on stock shocks for over a year w/ no probs.

Some coilovers give a rough ride, especially w/ stock shocks. But it all depends on the spring rates and how low your setting is.


There are coilover sleeves which are "adjustable springs" like Skunk2, Ground Controls (though they offer full-setups), Weapon R, etc.
And fully-threaded coilovers or dampers, whatever you want to call them. Shocks and Spring setup and are adjustable. These are like Tein Type-HA/etc., A'PEXi WS, A'PEXi N1, HKS Hiper Damper, Tanabe Sustec Pro, etc.


Sleeves run around the mentioned $320 to as low as $150 depending on where you buy them, quality/brand, etc.

Full-Setups cost $1200+ for a quality setup.

You have to remember somethings about coilovers and just lowering springs:

Coilovers you should get all corners even. This can take alot of time and patience especially for a newbie. If you do not get the corners to sit right it will corner worse than stock. Also with coilovers the spring rates are higher than OEM springs and usually much higher than aftermarket springs. This means you should get a quality aftermarket shock to match with the rates of your coilovers. You should not (just like any aftermarket spring or coilover) use them with stock shocks as your ride will be bouncy since stock shocks cannot handle the higher increased rates and will boil the shock fluid and blow them quickly. Also make sure you get an alignment.

Springs are easier since you just slap them on and get an alignment. Only difference is these usually come as one spring rate, some are hard, some are soft AND no adjustability with height.

i have ground controls, which ride good, but im also riding on tokico illuminas, so i dont really know how theyd ride on oem shocks

ahh i figured. thats exactly how my old skunkworks coilovers rode on stock shocks
