83 240D wont shift

[hydrostatic]

I have an 83 240D 4 speed.

It would not shift into 1st or 2nd.
I had to force the shifter over (as it would not move left into 1st or 2nd)
It still will not move into reverse....

I checked the linkage underneth the car, they seem ok
Some change had fallen into the shifter, i thought that may be my issue, it wasnt....any ideas?

I have an 83 240D with the exact same problem...did you ever find out what caused the problem??
