Service Engine Light Code P0302

I have a 1997 Totyota Corolla 1.6L automatic. I was driving to class this morning and the service engine light came on, I drove straight to the nearest Autozone and had the code pulled up. The code means that a misfire has occured in cylinder #2. I bought some spark plugs and i plan on changing those out tonight. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated. The car only has 40,000 miles on it and was owned by my grandpa who always had it serviced at the dealer. Also, how do I clear the code so the light will go off? Will i need to change the spark plugs first and see if it goes off or does it need to be reset? Thanks to all who can help me.

I could just be a glitch. To clear the code remove the positive lead of the battery for 15 seconds. The code will then clear. If there is a presistent problem the code will come back in the next few drive cycles.

In addition to the plugs you may wish to add some injector cleaner ito the fuel tank.

In any event, this is not a dibilitating problem

Hey thanks for your ideas. I happened to pick up some new spark plugs and after gapping them to the factory specs, i threw them in and no problems so far. Turns out the spark plugs had never been replaced. The old ones looked pretty used up, so I believe my problem is fixed.
