Trunk does not open with key? any ideas?
If my key stopped working to open my trunk, what possiblities could this be from? I pulled down my back seat and climbed in their to try to see how it worked and im puzzled, I see a black wire comming from the back of the keyhole leading to the locking device, is their a way I can manually open this while inside the trunk? Their has to be a way I can atleast do some thing by hand and open in from the inside out, Im worried I may need my spare tire one day.

Hey one of my friends had the same problem with his cavalier. what we ended up doin was installing a push button for the trunk.
Does the key still fit in the hole?? if so then you might wanna chack inside the trunk on the lock and make sure nothing is in the way. Just an idea. Last edited by KustmAce; 05-09-2006 at 09:23 PM. |

Re: Trunk does not open with key? any ideas?
What year is the car? The black "wire" you see leading from the key cylinder to the latch is a cable with plastic conduit. The reason for this is because the lock is remotely mounted from the key cylinder.Old cars (for example 62-79 Nova) the key cylinder was directly inline with the latch and no remote cabling was needed (also made for a very high liftover to get things into the trunk, being mounted above the licence plate).
I would recommend that the cable device be drilled out (held in by pop rivets) and the 2 bolts be taken out of the latch allowing the lid to raise with latch still locked into the floor. Then go to your GM dealer and buy the remote lever, and cable and any other hardware you need to add the interior remote release, and you can toss your key forever. |

Re: Trunk does not open with key? any ideas?
So it originally did work in the lock? Well, that'd certainly rules out the fact that you don't have a salvage car. When a car's backend is knocked off, alot of people forget to change the locks for the trunk since its replaced with the backend of a host car. So, would it possibly work if just the locks where changed? This whole thing might just be limited to that one simple lock.
If I sound like an idiot here, do tell me. ~Crazzzyj

Re: Trunk does not open with key? any ideas?
My 98 Cavy did this. The trunk release inside the car was broken and afte awhile the key wouldn't unlock the trunk. I ended up bringing it in to the dealer and it cost about $180 or so. Just depends on if you want to spend the money.

Re: Trunk does not open with key? any ideas?
The thing all the way in the back was a defect that was never published, it's a cheap piece of shit that breaks every 5 mins. Open your back seat and reach your hand back there and push over a copper looking piece of metal and the truck will open, then you'll probably have to replace the black box looking thing, it put wire around it like i did,
