What does the car do what it hits 45? Do the RPMs seem to bouce up and down? My 84 had this same problem... turned out to be the fuel filter. Very inexpensive, and easy to replace. Its right in the bottom front of the carb where the fuel line comes in.

Re: 84 wont go over 45 miles per hour..pleez help

had same problem with my 88 when i bought it and it was the computer controlled carburetor fouling out the engine, too much fuel, so i have converted to non ECM carb, especially since someone already swapped a non ECM HEI in it already

id say its probably the carb

hjave you pulled any spark plugs yet ?

this i would do and see if plugs are black or white or tan or brown

if they are tan or brown then its not the carb,

if theyre black or white then its carb

could also be black if burning oil and be white if burnign water

Do it big, give me more information; Is the trans shifting OK. What about the exhaust? It could be a clogged Cat Converter. What about tune-up lately, or Timing is not set correctly.

First off, what does the exhaust sound like? A wheezing or whistling noise is a sure sign of a restriction. Listen while someone gives it a little gas. Using a rag, hold it over the tail pipe while someone revs the motor a little. If there is little or no noise or pressure difference, you have a clogged exhaust.

Not the easiest job in the world, but if the exhaust is still suspect, remove the catalytic converter, wire up the rest of the exhaust and go for a very short ride. You'll see a difference right away if the cat was clogged, it will also be very heavy with carbon and soot.

Also take off the air cleaner and make sure the gas pedal linkage opens the carb all the way.

Good luck, Bob

----------------------------------------------------------------------It makes a rugged sounding noise once it reaches 20 miles per hour...no matter how much i push the gas the noise just gets worse.
