When I start my car it stalls a lot and when it does start the rpm needle goes all the way to about 5000 then it goes down and shuts off. Then I have to press the gas pedal so that it does shut off again, and the muffler is blowing thick dark smoke

Re: 95 stalls when starting
Well, it sounds as if you are extremely rich for some reason. Would this be sooty black smoke? If the air intake path is clear (good filter, no bird nest or something) then you've gotta determine why it thinks it needs to be so rich. Faulty coolant temp sensor can do this, bad fuel pressure regulator, I don't know what Honda calls it but domestic have an Idle Air Control that meters air past the throttle plate when it's closed. This is what acts as a choke on an FI engine. Sometimes they can cause cold start problems with mixture.
