High pitched whine from engine area

Hello,

Brand new (3 weeks) 2004 Xterra owner. Tonight my Xterra seems to have developed a high pitched whine coming from the engine. It happens during acceleration and while driving; basically when the gas pedal is depressed. If I depress the clutch and coast the noise stops. If I am fully stopped and not in gear and I rev the engine, I can hear it start up. My Xterra is a V-6 manual.

Any thoughts on what the issue could be? I plan on taking it in to be looked at by the dealer, but being the new owner, every odd noise seems like a cause for concern and I wanted to get an idea of what the problem might be.

Thanks!

Just guessing, but could be the belts. Brent might have a better idea.

Luckily it's new, so I would go to the dealer anyway as it's under warranty.

Yeah, I made an appointment with the dealer first thing today. Rational thought tells me it is likely something minor, but of course any unusual noise in a new car is discouraging to hear.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, after the night when I first heard the noise, it hasn't been heard since. So I've cancelled the dealer appointment. It would be hard for them to troubleshoot something that is not re-produceable at this time.

The Xterra is due for it's initial regular service soon; I will bring it up then. If it turns out to be anything out-of-the-ordinary, I will post it here for others to reference.

Thanks all!
