Why do some cops just not care?

Something brought this to my mind. A few weeks ago, I was waiting to turn left, and this intersection is really nasty, the left arrow only lasts for like 2 1/2 cars. So, I followed the one in front of me as closely as I safely could and carried on with my left turn, despite the light having turned red a good 2-3 seconds before I made it through the intersection.

Yes, I ran the red light, so to speak, but at least it was in a relatively safe manner, as the opposing traffic was still stopped. And yes, I realize I was an asshole, because nobody likes it when people do that.

I glanced over at the traffic that I was blocking the way for, and noticed that first in line was a police cruiser. I near crapped my pants, but he didnt blink, just carried on with his business.

It seems strange though, that one could have scored a good $200 ticket (I haven't done that kind of turning since then, since I've been afraid to, so I s'pose karma worked at least), but he didnt... but from reading these forums, some'll give tickets if you don't have your signal on long enough before turning right on red.

Strange, eh? But, why do some cops just not care? Columbus, my town, is riddled with traffic offenders, the average speed on the 35mph streets is around 50. Old people always want to share lanes with me, none of the SUV's in town (and near everyone owns one) have all their tail lights working, and thats just the beginning of it. Just seems like a lot of money could be made if the police would start patrolling... it'd make the streets safer too.

Re: Why do some cops just not care?

Because cops are people, sometimes they are tired, mad, sad, bored, hungry, cold and don't want to get out of their car...it all depends on the individual cop and the mood he or she is in.
