'99 radio removal

I'm trying to install an aftermarket cd changer in my escort. The problem I'm having is that I can't remove the stock radio/climate control module. I have already purchased Ford DIN tools but when I try to remove the radio, only the left side unlocks. Is there some sort of trick to this? Like having the temperature set all the way to warm or doing it durning a full moon? I'm stuck and I appreciate any advice you can give me.

I always just used nails.....i dunno what to tell you, specially since you got the tools. dont forget though, on the drivers side, under the dash, there is a cable going back that clips onto a little rod, take that off. It's a white clip, you can get it with ur fingers.

Do you have a pic of this clip or can you take one? If i can get my radio out i know i can fix the tape deck but i could only get the radio out about 3 inches. btw ddo these radios have the anti theft code and do i need to worry about it?

no code, dont worry about it....
I'll try to get a pic, but in the mean time, if you put your head on the gas pedal, then turn it towards the center console area, you will see a round black cover with a white center clipped on a rod. There is a little tab on the white piece, pull on it and pull the whole black cover/shroud off....there ya go....

I see the white inner circle in that circle i see a green tab. When you say pull do you mean pull the whole black circle piece straight off toward the drivers door?

ok I got it off then when i tried to put it back on it didnt seem to want to stay on i didnt hear a click. I ran out of daylight and its 20 degrees out so I stop Is there any tip?

any progress made on this?

I have a tape stuck in my tape deck and don't really want to destroy the deck, so I thought i might open the panel to see what's going on.
Are you sure you can just use your nails, aren't there any screws holding the panel in place?

I don't exactly know why you would have to remove the clip, and if it's not necessary to take out the tape deck temporarily I would like not to do it.

hope someone can help! thanks.

I made a detailed webpage it may answer your question radio removal
I had to remove the radio to fix my tape deck also and yes you need to remove the heater cable clip to take the radio out.
(I needed to take the cover off the radio to get to the "guts" of the tape deck to repair)

thanks that will help a lot, one more question, if i just need access to the tape deck, I will only have to perform those steps on the page until pulling out the radio cover yes? ie, I don't have to pull out the whtie power plugs, antenna and other tabs? or should I for any safety reasons?

Thanks.

I think you will have to if you are trying to get to the inside the radio the screws are in the back that hold the cover in place. they arent normal screws i think they are torx.
If you dont need to take the cover off then you wont have to disconnect the wires i can take more pics of the radio if you need
