Interior and dash lights

1990 topaz, new cd player shorted, replaced blown fuses. No dash lights
when I turn on head lights, but when I turn switch for overhead light
the dash lights come on. I took out overhead lamp so it wouldn't be on
while driving at night. Is the switch broke or is a wire shorting somewhere else? I'm lost !!!! thanks.
