replace in-dash cassette w/cd in 99-00 540

I am seriously considering purchasing a 99-00 540i but one thing that seems to really bug me is the in-dash cassette deck. Can this be replaced with an oem in-dash cd player from a newer model.

I've seen some of olde models with aftermarket cd players but they don't look very appealing to me.

Any ideas.
