Would it be cheaper to replace the transmission or get a new case?

I cracked my transmission case and its leaking oil now. Is it possible to just replace the case (and is it cheaper), or should I just get a whole transmission?

note: I don't have any mods on it or anything, its just my plain Jane everyday car...

my guess would be that it would be much cheaper to just buy a used tranny and install it rather than buy a case and pay a technician to install all of your tranny parts into it.

just take you case to someone that knows how to tig weld and they can weld it up and it will be as good as new, that is of course assuming it is a GIANT hole.

How hard is it to install a transmission? I haven't done anything major like that before. Also, how much would a transmission be for my car?

$150 - $200 for a used non cracked case. look around ebay.

that would definately be the best option. it will be alot less money then going to a junk yard and getting a used tranny. where is the crack loacated?

Re: Would it be cheaper to replace the transmission or get a new case?

I'm not sure. I didn't see it myself, but the guy I took it to said it was cracked and tried to patch it up with something (epoxy I think) just to make it not leak as bad. It helped a little (its drivable but I gotta keep an eye on the oil level), but he said he couldn't do anything else because they don't do major transmission repairs there.

I talked to a guy at a transmission place just now, and he said that regardless of whether it can be welded or not, they would hafta take off the tranny, and since they would be doing that, I might as well try to find a used tranny and get them to put it on. The thing is, I can't find one anywhere, so I dunno. =\ Plus, it would cost $300 just for them to put it on.

This sucks...

you need to find out where the tranny is cracked. first. if it is in a spot that can be welded without the tranny coming off then i would definately do that. try to loo on the tranny where there will be a wet spot. and yea that sounds funny. but, look to see where it is wet and where it could be coming from. then figure from there if it can be welded. if it can then take it too some redneck shop that has a welder and give them like $40 to do it. also there is this stuff called JB Weld, if you can find the crack and think you might be able to do this yourself then i would take this JB Weld and clean off the area really good then work it into the crack and leave some around the crack to help hold it on there. and trust me on this JB Weld stuff. i cracked my engine block around the oil sending unit and used JB Weld to seal off the crack and it works. no leak. and that is with about 60psi of oil pressure behind it.

how will I know if its in a place that can be welded? Also, how would I get all the oil out so they COULD weld it? And yeah I've got some JB Weld. I'll see if I can use some of that. Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Re: Would it be cheaper to replace the transmission or get a new case?

Well I took it to the shop and he told me that they gotta take the tranny off before they could do anything because it was too low. So I took it to the transmission place and they're takiing it off right now and then I'm gonna take it to the welding place...

I hope this works

Re: Would it be cheaper to replace the transmission or get a new case?

I got it welded about a week ago, and it seems to be holding up well. It cost $300 at the tranny shop for them to take it off $80 for the welder to weld it (it took longer than it was supposed to cuz he had to grind off the JB weld), and then another $100 at the tranny shop to replace the gasket which got torn up from the welding (from the heat I guess). Thanks for all of your help guys!
