2000 Escort ZX2 ignition problem

Probably a ridiculous question, but I don't know much about cars... the key won't turn in the ignition- at all. Tried a graphite oil per friends suggestion - didn't work. What are the other possibilities?

This sounds like a stupid suggestion but the steering wheel lock might be preventing your turning the key. try turning the wheel a bit then turning the key.
