Question Need some help deciding

Further narrowing down my search for a new car i think i've decided on a honda prelude, if i can find one for a decent price (i'm thinking the highest i can go without financing or loans is about 8 g's). Anyways, i want a prelude no earlier than a 92, and to show my ignorance i dont' know when all the diff. generation ludes start and end. one thing i really like about the late '90's ones are the tip-tronic mode shifters. sadly, i dont' know how to drive stick, and it looks like i will be buying a car out of state, off ebay or through my uncle. so i would prefer an automatic but i could learn a stick. so which would be better, the earlier the 90's or the later 90's. i would like a later 90's but i'm affraid of the price. Any suggestions would help.

learn to drive stick. you will enjoy driving emensly more. and i would buy a 94-96 vtec, if i had 8 g's to spend. you'd have plenty left over to make it faster.

Definitely agree with dbebesi, Hondas just aren't made to be automatics and it makes driving so much more fun. As for the car, I've heard the 4th gens, 92-96, are lighter and a LITTLE bit faster. Just make sure you get one with a vtec, and try to avoid 96, cause you're gonna want OBD1 if you plan to mod, and I think atleast most 96's are OBD2.

That is the type of harness it is I think? I know the OBD1 has less restrictive emission standards, where as OBD2 is makes it harder to mod because it is easier to trip CEL codes and just stuff like that. I know it's vague but I don't know much about this in detail. Someone else got a better description?

hey, i had an automatic 92 Si (dohc non vtec) and i now have a 96 Prelude Vtec and the 96 is way better. First off, the automatic wasnt fun at all and people always say "Oh its automatic". I got so sick of having a show car and have ppl say that. Now i have the 96 and the 5 speed is alot better. Also i havnt noticed much in the way of the Obd2 and Obd 1 computers. The 96 has intake, exhaust, pulleys, msd ignition and had a field sfc-vtec controller and i didnt have any problems with throwing computer codes.

Re: Need some help deciding

"OBD" stands for on board diagnostics (as was said before) and OBD 2 is simply a newer, sometimes cumbersome, sometimes informative system that hondas use to address problems with your car...

4th gen preludes were 92-96
5th gens were 97-01 (then production on the prelude stopped)

i wouldnt let price scare you away from the 5th gens. point being i spent, conincedently, $8000 on my 97 prelude base and im still super satisfied with my purchase...only in my case i am and will continue to pay for the car for another 3 years. like i said im super pumped and without a doubt think that you will also. definately go with a manual and learn to drive it. you really, really wont be sorry and it wont be hard at all especially after youve spent $8000 on the damn thing.
