i recently watched pimp my ryde and saw X-zibit gave out a portable GPS to that chick with the 65 VW bug. i was wondering where can i get one of those GPS system for my car. not the bolt in bigg ass one. just the small one that you can take it with you and put it in your car when you drive. and how much will that cost me? know what iam talkin about?

Almost all portable GPS' have holders that you could put in your car... and a cig lighter power cord.

you have never seen a GPS? search.. there are hundreds of models... and they all range in price from like $100+. they sell them at hunting stores.. radio shack probably sells them.. tons of places on the internet.

but i thought you need a company like onstar to connect you with the satellite. or do you just need the GPS itself and you're good to go.

You don't need a service to use a GPS.

I have a laptop i take around with me. I have a nice mount for it that fits in passenger seat. The GPS module then sits suctioned to the front window. It's nicer on the laptop because it talks but it does take up the passenger seat then...

I had a small portable one but it wasn't as nice. I now have a radioshack GPS for the PC works well for what I need it.

i was just reading upon all the different kinds of GPS. the handheld standalone VS the laptop addon. it seems that the handheld doesn't give as detailed maps as the laptop would. all the handheld ones i've looked all said "street maps costs extra" does that mean it won't show you every single streets in the city? i am so far kinda leaning towards the laptop add on now.

the hand held didn't show all streets. just major roads. It also wasn't updateable. My friends handheld wasn't any better. It just showed coordinates. You could program in home coordinates into it. But it didn't really help much.

The laptop version is just a "radioshack gps" It's really nice because I can get new software every year if I wanted. Maps that are not included on the 2 cd's or when they are updated during that year are downloadable from the internet. I can plot my trip before I leave and find the fastest, shortest, most direct route and switch while I'm moving.

A problem with having a handheld gps was also I'd have to pull over to check it. With the laptop It has speech recognition and talks. So I don't have to pull over I just keep going and say aloud "Remap" and it takes my current location and remaps it to the destination. It also reads them aloud. "Turn left in .5 miles" "Turn left in 30 seconds" things like that. It can estimate your speed and give you time estimates also.

I dont have the exact name of the software because I can't find the cd's but I think it was like maps usa or something. I'll search tommorow for it.

Anymore questions please ask I use mine alot.And love it. You can't beat the quality for 99 dollars. I've had mine 3 years now. I assume they may have improved some since. I have not purchased new software in 2 years but I know it's availiable. If no new roads go in there isn't a real need for it.
