Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

Hi again
I'm thinking of painting drivetrain with the same color as body (Automotive spray paint). But I don't like that shiny look so I would clear coat with Testors dull(flat) lack. Can I do this? I guess If I can paint enamels over automotive spray paint I can also clear coat with Testors flat coat?
Tnx!

Re: Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

Darn. I will be using DupliColor as usual. I guess that's acrylic laquear.
And what is with Tamiya spray paint and Testors clear coat?

I was also checking this table (bottom page):
http://www.tamiya.com/english/scale/beginner2/2.htm

Can come handy to someone

OK, thanks!
I will also test paint on some plain styrene to check it before painting the model.

You can use Testors clear over the auto paint, just no auto paint over the Testors.

i always use Tamiya x-22 clear over enamels and laquears and i have also used enamel clears over acrylics as well with no problems. but no laquear clear over acrylic or enamels it eats into them.
and when i want a dull coat i add flat base from Tamiya to the x-22 and you get a flat base

Re: Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

Testors clear sucks...If your going for durable paint you need to use automotive paint through out from the same brand, as well as the same type (i.e. acrylic laquer)

Interesting. You all say that Testors clear sucks. But my friend who makes scale model airplanes said Testors-ModelMaster makes the one and only Clear for him. He's using flat.

So, basicly I can paint enamel over automotive. But I shouldn't use lacquear over enamel - sadly I don't have a pic from a few month ago when I was clearcoating enamel paint with automotive lacquear. The enamel got all soft and cracked and start crazin'.
Thanks guys!

Re: Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

The reason why he likes their clear coats is because he only uses dullcote. Testors Glosscote is basically dull coat.

As far as coverage types. Enamel on enamel, acrylic on acrylic, laquer or laquer, and so on.

Great GTMike! Thanks 100 times
And yes, he's only using dull coat.

And just one more
How good is Tamiya enamel compared to Testors-ModelMaster enamels?

For clear coats I'll order Tamiya X-22 - thanks to Phase5

Re: Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

Havent toyed with the Tamiya enamel, I usually steer clear of enamels. I always paint using Acrylic Urethane, Acrylic Laquer, or just basic Acrylic.

I have used MM enamels though. I find them pretty nice. They are the caviar of Testors.

Re: Testors clear coat over Automotive Paint?

I've had excellent results with Testor's #2936 Clear spray. May be just me though.
