Intro

Hello out there,

A little about myself. From 1976 thru 1994 I worked as a ASE mechanic in the USA, mostly in independent shops. The last 5 years I held 2 jobs, primary mechanic at a friends Autobody shop and at various New Vehicle Dealerships in southern Dayton, Ohio. As I mentioned above I was ASE certified, in the following fields, Drivability, (GM & Chrysler trained), Heavy line, (demestic & import), and brakes, (also demestic & import). As the lead mechanic at the autobody shop I dealt with the mechanical side of customer repairs. When my friends partner bought a Used Car Dealerships I decided to work full time for them. Still repairing customer vehicles, but also preinspecting vehicles at auctions 3 days a week, and total inspection of the vehicles purchased at these auctions. Then making repairs on these vehicles as necessary to bring them to the minimum saftey and performanced standard as set by the owners. (This autobody shop had always maintained a very high reputation for quality workmanship and custimer satifaction, the owners were insistant that this standard carried over into the used car business. (It is not uncommon for customers to wait long periods of time, when the shop is busy, so that the body repairs could be completed by this shop.)) My other duties included general service, (tune-ups, brake work, electrial systems service, cooling system service, etc.), heavy line work, (engine and/or transmission swaps, rear end service, cluch replacement, steering and suspension repairs, etc.), of dealership and customer vehicles. The business then picked up an extended warranty contract service. At which time I was given the responsibility of varifing that the customer's warranty covered any or all of the needed repair(s). Upon varification, order all necessary parts, schedule an appointment, then repair the item(s), all in a timely and satisfactory maner. You may wonder why would I leave such a postition? Well, as fate would have it the partners started to dispute over who had the greater responsibility, basically a money thing. Eventually the partnership disolved and my friend kept the body shop. His expartner wanted me to choose between them, I guess he thought I would stay with him seeing most of my income came from the used car business. The expartner was wrong, I chose friendship over finance, and try as he might my friend wasn't able to keep me busy enough to justify my income he continued to pay. So I decided to work for my friend part time, and take yet another friends offer to provide housing for me, to fullfil my end of the deal I returned to college and earned a degree in computer programming. While in college, and even after I graduated I continued working, when needed, as a mechanic for my friend with the body shop. In 1999 after some relationship problem of my own I relocated to California, my friend that help support me through college had, a year previously, relocated to Utah. I still enjoy working on cars, but now that I'm out of the mainstream field it has become more dificult to stay up on the ever changing, advancing, auto industry.
Well I've most likely already made this intro too long, so I'll sign off in saying I'll try to offer advice where I can and look foward to your advice where I can't.
