For those don't have air brush, how many spray can you use painting a model?
As topic says, how many spray cans you use to paint the body normally (for a basic 1/24 car model)? on average, i use 2 Duplicolor Spray cans to paint the body. (with like half of the 2nd can left after all the painting) then + primer and maybe clearcoat. I know that one of my mate only use 1/2 can of Tamiya spray can per model which is a bit hard for me to believe as i imagine the paint will be very thin and any polishing will make it back to the primer. But it also makes me think something must be wrong with my spray painting skills and i wasted too much..
i normally do 2-3 mist coats + 2 "wet" coats. Actually if nothing goes wrong, 1 spraycan is JUST enough to cover the body and bumper...etc but i tend to spray a bit more than it needed because i polish back to primer quite often so i want the paint to be a bit thicker. so how about you guys? |

It varies by the model, as some of those models with many separate parts requires around 2 cans of duplicolor.
But like a Tamiya model, or a simple Revell one will take 1/2 a can of Duplicolor. As for Tamiya sprays, they run out too fast on me so I don't use them because they cost too much. |

Good question! I am curious to know too. When I was doing my Tamiya VW New Beetle, I used 2.5 cans of Tamiya sprays. I was told by my local hobby shop that 1 can is good enough for 2 to 3 cars, I couldn't believe it. I thought there must be something wrong with my way of doing it. I sprayed and sanded each layer. Not only do I find it very wasteful it was also time-consuming.
PMan did at least 6 thin coats of sprays on his Vantastic. And the resulting finish was Fantastic. I wonder how many cans of Tamiya paint did he used based on his method? |

Must be an acquired technique to be able to get 2-3 models of out a single Tamiya can.

I use 2/3 of the can to spray a body, unless it's a wagon like Hiace or Estima, then I need 1 complete can to spray 1 body.

can those who use 1 or less than 1 can (esp those who use Tamiya spray can) tell us the secret in how to do that?????
Do you guys just do 2 layers and spray at very close distance but move very fast? like 3-4 inch ??? If i can use 1 instead of 2 can per model.. it'll save a lot of $$$ in long run .. and also help slow down the rate we pollute this world? |

So I hold the can near my face and spray at an arms length?
Wouldn't that kill me... |

1 is fine for me and i suck at modeling. unless i marr the paint somewhere then i will need more. but my 240z with tamiya spray actually left at least a quarter of a can left. i like tamiya, very consistent and goes on well

I get 2-3 cars out of a can of Tamiya - but I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not using enough. I love Tamiya paints because they go on so smooth and the spray nozzle beats Duplicolor and Plastikote to smithereens!
Also, I do have an airbush, and I love it! But, sometimes I am just too lazy to do the setup and cleanup - rattle cans are faster! Besides, if I can get the color I want in a spray, I'll use that. Nail polish is one of my other favorite paints, and an airbrush is the only way to go!.. Tim D. http://modelcartech.com |
