Re: Radar

My overall opinion with radar detectors is that any decent one(which there are probably around 10) will be fine. I ran for years on my $80 ebay cobra 8 or 9 band. It saved me plenty of times, but I got pulled over plenty of times. Bottom line, no radar detector makes you invincible. You can get the best out there and still get pulled over. So get a decent one for a good deal. If you can find any of the ones mentioned for a good deal on ebay, then do that. Be happy, but realize that you aren't invincible. Just my .02

Re: Radar

Is buying a good radar detector a good investment? Obviously, if it saves you just once when you are going real fast, it'll be worth the cash and points on your license rite?

I have about 200 dollars and im not sure whether to buy a good radar detector, i think the valentine 1 works good, Or should i buy a CAI?

OK, heres the deal. Just because a detector says it detects all the same bands as the more expenssive ones does not make it equal. The different bands (KA, K, X, Laser) are the frequency at which the radar is being shot. Where reliability gets more noticable is when the detector jets up in price. Just because a cheap $50 detector says it will detect all those bands does not mean it will detect them in time. The Passport X50 has a rediculous detection range. This is why it is more $$ than the Cobra. In years past the V1 has been rated the best on the market, but this has changed. The X50 has it beat hands down in every aspect, including price (plus it looks a hell of alot better). The only thing that the V1 has that the X50 doesnt is a direction meter. This is nice, but sometimes when multiple bands are being detected at once all 4 ways light up, so its pretty much useless. The X50 also has an "Expert Meter", which allows it to DISPLAY up to 8 or 9 bands at the same time, this is Key when determening the most threatening signal. For the most part X band is no longer used by Law Enforcement, so any X band signal is probably low and being set off by an automatic door or security system. The X50 has a setting to turn the Xband to low or off all togeather. KA band is ALWAYS a cop, and detects very quickly. Like i said earlier in a post, i have picked up cops miles in front of me on the Highway, plenty of time to slow down. I would recomend the X50 hands down over ANY other detector. It is easy to use, and easy to program for your personal wants and needs. I have alot of information on the X50 if anyone has anymore questions.

Also for the person who asked about Ku band. Dont worry about that feture unless you plan on moving to Europe, as that is the only place it is used.

VG2 Cloaking is also very important. The V1 failed everytime with this test even though it says it has it. The X50 passed about 75 percent of the time, which is not perfect, but better than nothing at all. NOT ALL STATES ARE LEGAL!!! Make sure you check your DMV!!!!! Almost all states are, but i know there are 1 or 2 out there.
