2001 van was running rough, and computer kept throwing the code for cylinder 3 misfire. I started with half can of B12, then wires, plugs, cap and rotor. Replaced the injector for cylinder 3, still dead. Assumed bad 'new' injector, so returned and got another, but took injector from #6 and put in #3, then 'new' one in #6 (removing the upper intake isn't the easiest job). Computer throws multiple cylinder misfires, and cylinder 3 is still dead (shadetree inspection of all 6 plugs). Leading up to the swapping of the bad injector, there was a few hours worth of work swapping plugs and wires to different positions to see if any of those were bad, but all were good, and still are.

Now on to the ecm, which can't be found in local junkyards, will have to order a reman unit from local parts store.
Did you by chance have the cap and rotor off then have somene crank the engine over while you watched the distributor to see if any spark was visible that should not be. The distributor on 99-02 manily the 99's are noted for problems. I would look into the distributor before replacing ECM.

Check this video out:

Have you done a compression test on #3 clyinder?

ecm on ebay item # 120676620646

Enter villager ecm on ebay motors, you should get about 6 pages of ecm's for all years 93-02.

Does the distributor shaft have any side to side play? Also check for any brownish dust on the optical sensor.

sending pm.

Re: 2000 Villager Misfire

tempfixit, thanks for the vid and advice. I actually replaced the distributor a couple of months ago for a sensor problem that was underneath the optical pick-up. I reinspected the distributor last night, and it is still clean enough to eat off of.

As for compression, it is good. Still trying a couple of little things before biting the bullet for an ECM.

90 Escort man,

Did you install a OEM distributor or one off of ebay??? The multiple missfires really makes me believe the CMPS in the distributor is faulty.
Have you tried the forum I mentioned in PM? I highly recommend posting there before buying ecm.

Re: 2000 Villager Misfire

tempfixit,

Brand new distributor, not reman. Cranked engine over with cap and dust cover off, no stray spark anywhere.

Checking other sources for problem currently.

Thanks!

Re: 2000 Villager Misfire

I have a similar problem. I have a 1999 mercury villager that is showing a random multiple cylinder misfire code and an o2 sensor code. The vehicle has a small leak on the exhaust between the catalytic converters and I'm not sure if this would be affecting the back pressure enough to make the engine throw these codes. Also I replaced the distributor and tried the original placement of the distributor and multiple placements. I am going to get the exhaust fixed and put either b12 cleaner/ seafoam cleaner through the engine and fuel system to see if anything will clear up the fuel system/ make it slightly better. The vehicle runs rough at an idle but runs smooth when reving and at higher speeds above approx 1300+RPM's. Are there any other explanations to why it would be running rough?
