Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Wow, it' pretty tough to go back to simple plastic and playing with stretched spruce after seeing all those interior wonders.
Gio, do you make instruments for NASA also? Again, Wow.

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Fantastic job guys ! Congrat !
I see that I'm not the only one interested by your additional PE sheet...would you consider issuing some more and make a few happy modelers over the forum ? Another potential dream : would you make the decal for 599 Panamerican version ? The kit is coming both from Revell and Fujimi soon...? |

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
How does that saying go? “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”? Something like that.
While Gio has been setting all time new highs with his part of this thread, I think it's about time I brought this thread back down to Earth ![]() Interior. Just so you know, the redhead of this pair of China Girls has seats with the "Daytona" upholstery pattern – so of course Revell kindly decided to mold the kit with the other style This has brought my build to a grinding halt for the past 2 months. The prospect of modifying this just totally daunted me. On top of that, it come just after Tang shared his mind boggling seats with us – talk about a hard act to follow... ![]() At first I was pretty intimidated by the idea of changing the pattern but then I remembered hiroaki's great 550M thread with his scratch built seats and this put an idea in my head that seemed feasible. Basically my plan was to grind down the Revell pattern, make a master “Daytona” pattern, cast it, cut out shaped inserts and glue them in place. Sounded simple enough. Now some pics for those of you who don't like reading my prose ![]() First thing I did was to carve off the molded in seat belts, add some styrene bits to simulate hardware and put p/e cavallinos on the headrests. (FYI at some point in the process I mixed up some bottles and tried to wash the seats with acetone – that's why they look so crap )![]() Next thing was to make the pattern. I did this by cutting 1, 1,5 and 2mm strips of styrene and cementing them to some styrene sheet. One master for the front seats ad one for the rear seats. This was pretty time consuming and tedious and I started rushing it – first paving stone on the road to hell... ![]() and so on and so on.... Once I had my 2 masters I made a silicone mold of them. I decided to make resin copies because my assumption was that the chances of me cutting and trimming to a good fit first time were less than zero and I really didn't feel like cutting another million little styrene strips. With a mold, I could simply re-cast another set. ![]() From the mold I could cast two wafer-like copies (This picture shows the resin copy and the styrene master) ![]() Here you can see the cast pattern with the seat. ![]() The resin master was cut into the appropriate 8 pieces, the templates applied and the pieces cut out. This is a test fit of the first panel. ![]() This is a test fit of all 8 panels in place. ![]() I try to be an honest critic of my own work. IMO this was a pretty good idea that didn't work out as well as it was supposed to. Not because the idea was bad but because I just didn't execute it well enough :[ I gave myself an award for this update – the Klutz Krap Award. Here is a picture following the awards ceremony: I'm going to paint it up and see how it looks when the whole car is put together. I fit still looks crap, I have a spare kit and I can try again. Thanks for looking and now back to the Master – Mr Pong

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Klutzman, ten points for ingenuity. Three points for brevity but nine points for eloquence. Your prose is just fine, but it would be fun if you tried writing in verse. Hmmm
That aside, if you're unhappy with the result, why not remove the whole area with the pattern from the plastic seat completely (as in to the point when there is a gaping hole in the sear ) and insert your resin Daytona pattern instead?

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Master is someone that teach... and your idea teach, BRAVO!
Prize isn't well deserved , really the result seem good: as Ales said all you need is mill down original (crappy, those desreve prize) pattern and smooth out a bit dayto shapes, would be more "soft".

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Usually when I come here to see an update, I have to make sure my seatbelts are on. And of course here is another brilliant way to take something that is good enuff for most of us peasants and make it into something from the modelling olympics. I'm not sure what you mean by bringing this thread down to Earth, prob because I must be on Mars myself but I think that master and all the casting is the cat's pajamas. Great work I say, maybe in real it isnt as good as what you were after but it sure is great in the pictures.

Hi Klutzie~
Your prize looks rather cute, make me one some day please~~~ Can we let the Klutzie Krap Award be some AF official prize? I can't see any crap in your pics, your styrene sheet works really deserve positive comment. I think they'll look great when painted. |

Re: Ping & Pong present: Two VERY Red Ferraris
Hey you two modelers from the "Chinese - Italian - Polish - grappy-Revell-kits- upgrading - Mafia"
: What you bring here is outstanding !!Each time I open the thread I see fantastic scratchbuilding, self-made decals and PE-parts and now some new seat upholstery This upholstery looks better the the kit pattern, for other 612 models, too. Just a question: Do you glue the resin on the seat without sanding down the (old) pattern a little bit ??
