Stomp it or Push it?

I have a 94' 2dr cavi rally sport w/2.2l 4 cyl. When i just press the accelerator to speed up there's no power. But, if I take my foot completely off and stomp it there's plenty of power. WHY? AND is this bad on the engine?

Re: Stomp it or Push it?

Are there any codes? If so, that should tell you where to look.

If not, it could be the TPS or MAP sensor.

Could also be a transmission problem if it's not downshifting you won't have any power. If you downshift manually does it have power?

It certainly isn't good to be doing that, but it doesn't hurt that much. Just a little more wear on the drivetrain.

Re: Stomp it or Push it?

I dont happen to have a code reader. Also I don't know what those sensors are. As far as i can tell the tranny is shifting fine.
probably wouldn't be worse for the wear.

Re: Stomp it or Push it?

Well, and old mechanic once told me start with the simple things first. Is the air cleaner plugged, how about your feul filter, friend of mine had a mouse nest in his air intake tube hey don't laugh the little critters get in everywhere. one other silly thing, and it is under the dash, there is a crimped stop on your throttle cable, if it came loose might be moving until you bind it by stomping on the throttle. Easy to tell, pull off your, air intake tube press the throttle to the floor, and see if the butterfly opens all the way. Have trouble believing it is the cat converter plugged, cause anything rattling arround in there is going to plug it worse when you stomp on it. Just some thoughts, good luck and let us know what you find, knowledge is always power, specially when you hear it twice, at my age usually takes the second time to stick

Re: Stomp it or Push it?

Oh one other thought, for twenty bucks or so you can get a manual at any parts store, will tell you what those sensors are, TPS could be falling off, for all we know, nice thing about a manual, if ya get lost, at least you can read it a bit and get farther lost thats why I'm in here.
