'98 Crown Vic will not start

OK, I have a bit of a dilema going on. I have a '98 Crown Vic (4.6L) that will not start. I drove it home with no issue, then the next day it would not start and has not started since. Here is what I have checked so far:

Fuel filer,
Fuel pump,
Relays for the fuel pump and ESM (next to the fuel pump relay)
inertia switch in the trunk.
the fuel lines (no blockages)

I have determined that there is no fuel getting to the engine. This was traced back to the pump which is not recieving voltage. At the inertia switch I am seeing 6 volts (not sure if it sould be 12).

Any help that anyone can provide would be apreciated.

If you are getting 6Vdc at the inertia Switch, you do not have enough voltage to run the pump. The I.S. is between the relay and the pump, so it should see battery voltage during normal operation. ALso, the pump is only commanded for a short time after a "key on", until the EEC sees the engine is turning over at which time it will command the relay closed to acitivate the pump.

Check your connections at the underhood relay center, and at the power post just behind the battery. You also need to KNOW if the EEC is getting a crank signal (CMP), if not you'll not get fuel, spark, or start.

OK here is what I have found.

How do I know the EEC is getting crank signal?
I have tried to start the car again and held the starter on for about 30 seconds, The car seemed to try to start but it seemed starved for gas. It did run poorly for a few seconds, then it was done. I have been able to do this several times.

Someone told me that there is a fuel pressure switch on the fuel rail. Could this be causing some issues??

Also there seems to be a pressure regulator on the fuel line before the fuel rail, could this be an issue.

I have disconnected the fuel line at the fuel filter and no gas came out when I turned the ignition on. so I know that the lines are not getting pressurised.

Greetings. I just had the same problem with a 97 Crown Vic. The fuel pump kicks in (i can hear it with a tube) when the key is first turned "on" and then the engine starts briefly and dies. I connected an AutoTap scanner but it registered no DTCs. Could you tell me what turned out to be the problem in your case?

If the EEC does not get a "crank" signal from the CMP, it will not turn on the fuel pump relay during cranking.

Using a scan tool that can read ECM data (most can't, see www.obd-2.com for something that can), look for "RPM" while cranking, if it's zero the CMP is bad OR the trigger wheel disintegrated (not likely).

O.K. Folks:

Here is the answer to the 92-98 Ford no-start problem. It appears that this is quite common. Standard Engine Controls and Fuel Systems has actually posted a tech-tip on it:

Go to pages 3 and 4 of this, and you will see that the problem is the C103 connector.

Make sure you pack the connector with dielectric grease once you fix it.

hay modmech i have a similer problem I have a 91 crown vic I've started it before set it on time ,bought a new dist,cap, coil,and rotor.sometimes it turns on and times when you crank it and get no fire at all. I had my uncle wiggle some wires next to the battery and it started then ran for about a minute then it just shut off.I have gas presure,fire to coil but no sparks comming from the coil to the dist . I PROB THE CONNECTOR WITH A TEST LIGHT AND IT HAS FIRE BUT WHEN YOU CRANK THE ENGINE THE TEST LIGHT IS SUPOSE TO FLASH BUT IT DOESNT PLEASE HELP ME !!!! THANKS
