I have been lucky enough to see #018 twice in Auckland and Taupo.

If I knew that it would have been at a track day I would have made the drive up, but I only found out about it being at Taupo when I saw the pictures the next day

I've also heard that it might belong to Lanzante. They definitely had a hand in its final racing efforts in the 1998 British GT Series.

Anyway, it doesn't get out much.

It's a surprising world sometimes, but it would be very surprising if PL personally owned that car. It would represent a great deal of money sunk into one asset. His involvement with F1s has been primarily Le Mans '95, and support for a small number of F1 owners since then.
His forte is really '50s - '60s sports racing cars. In that world, he could add considerable value through a beautiful restoration of a neglected car.
Unless he got this GTR for a truly cheap price, I can't see his investing in it.

Well surely they've had it for a long, long while.

F1 values have gone sky high over the last few years, he'd probably make a mint if he sold it.

This is kind of how I have felt about the news. Plus I think if it was personally owned it would be used in some capacity to promote the business perhaps.

I think the more logical explanation is that ownership has been attributed to them in certain situations in order to refrain from being truthful about who actually owns the car. We saw the same thing with Mr Selldorff's McLarens and the relationship with Turner Motorsports. A lot of people were left to think those cars belonged to Will.

Re: How many McLaren F1s have you seen?

...or is it just because Lanzantes ran the car, and no-one has had any concrete proof since then as to who owns it, that assumptions have been made? I doubt they would need to refrain from naming the owner, it's just possible that A) no-one has come out and asked them or B) they no longer know who owns it?

If you're talking about the car w Gulf livery (I wasn't keeping track of the chassis #), stored in that facility not far from his place, PL showed me that car some years ago. It was road-legal then (although the job was done by someone other than the factory, and not done well), and it did not belong to him; it belonged to a client of his.

Re: How many McLaren F1s have you seen?

I think it would be news if the Gulf livery has been restored on #02R.

Russ - how long ago did you see it and how much of the blue and yellow were left? Just the wheels, like in this photo?

Re: How many McLaren F1s have you seen?

This thread makes me weep... i had the opportunity to see an F1 at the PTG racing garage years ago when bimmerforums.com organized an open house but never went and im still kicking myself. When i was in london a couple years ago, i never made it to Park lane to see #001

I went to the new showroom a couple months ago on a 7 hour layover but it wasnt the same as seeing an F1.

Any F1s on the east coast that i can cross my fingers and hope to run into? (or make a trip of going to visit?)

It has been a very long time since #001 graced the showroom. A couple of years ago - and I hope you mean like 8 years ago - you would have seen #065, but the showroom was closed in early 2004. Maybe that takes the sting away just a bit.

The northeast has quite a few F1s. They don't seem to get out much though.

Re: How many McLaren F1s have you seen?

About two dozen of Ralph's cars were just on display in Paris for several months in a museum connected to the Louvre. That ended on August 28th and it might be a while before he does something like that again. The last instance was 2005 in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts.

If you were in London in 2004 you missed seeing XP5 in the showroom, but you would have needed to be there before March as that was when they shuttered it.
