hi my friend has a 94 chey 1500 4X4, 5.7L engine, after he got stuck in a snow bank, when ever he drives it the back wheels lockup, I checked the diff and rear brakes every thing is good, could it be the transfer case or the trany thats locking up.

Re: Rear wheels lockup

When does it lock up, when he accelerates? When he hit the brakes?

He may have crushed a brake line, so the brakes are slow to release, after they are applied. Or a parking brake cable got snagged or bent, locking the brakes on.

Re: Rear wheels lockup

hi it locks up when you give it gas, I put the truck on jack stands and put it in drive 2 wheel then 4 wheel drive it doesn't lockup till I give it gas if I let off the gas it unlocks, it does the same in 2 wheel or 4 wheel.

check the rear wheel bearings ..could be these got damaged when stuck in snow..this can cause the brake shoes to drag ..

Re: Rear wheels lockup

Hi there is no noise or movement in the rear wheels or brake drag both rear wheels spin freely, would a transfer case lockup like that or is it direct drive in 2 wheel.

i to would look for a pinched line or have you tried looseing the parking brake? try this unplug vaccum line from brake power booster and see what it does but when unhooked the pedal will be hard as a rock and see if it locks up?

Re: Rear wheels lockup

Here is what I tried put the truck on jack stands put it in drive gave it some gas it would lockup at this point I had a friend see if he could spin the back wheels and sure enough they ar free so I do not thing there any problem with the brakes or line, if it was a line you wouldn't be able to ture the back wheels so easy after pressing the brakes or if e-cable was stuck the wheels whould not ture as easy after appling them, I also pulled the pan on the diff and no broken teeth or any thing out of the norm. So Im thinking its either the trany or the transfer case because there is a clunk under the truck when it lockup.

Also check the drive shaft and u-joints very closely for any damage.

ok now i agree with you on that tranny. i just wanted to know because i'll never by master cyl at auto zone the front brakes locked up with bad master cyl and had to unhook vaccum line going to booster to let them realese and it was there dam master cyl. i've changed and bench bleed so many and never had a problem this time it was there fault but my fault buying it there.

Re: Rear wheels lockup

Now the question is, could it be the transfer case or just the trany, has any one herd of a transfer case locking up? The truck drive as if someone throughs the shifter into park when you give gas, when you let off the gas its back in drive. So Im thing its the trany.

Re: Rear wheels lockup

If it does it in 2wd, then I'd say it's in the tranny...the transfer case acts like a pass-through at that point. But you can also shift the TC into neutral and at least listen for that clunk of binding gears if it's happening in the tranny.
