94 Oldsmobile 98 Regencey Elite Issues HELP ME!

Hi own a 94 Oldsmobile 98 Regencey Elite with a 3.8L V6 engine. It has around 108,000 miles. And now for the problem part. Whenever i move the car back and forth for a while (ie parralle parking) the engine starts to rev up on it own and does not go down. It continues to do that until i turn it off. After i turn it off and turn it back on its fine. Another issue ive had is the Check Engine Light randomly coming on. But heres the strange thing if i turn the car off and then restart it the light stays off and doesnt come on again.... So if you think you could help me out that would be great!

Thanks

Yes you need a scanner. 94/95 can be a transition year and a scanner may be required.

Chances are, your car is OBD1, so codes can be extracted without a scanner, using the method shown here.

Note the diagnostoc connector on your car. If it has 12 pins, it's OBD1, and you can use the YouTube directions. If the connector has 16 pins, then you have OBD II and you need a scan tool.

Follow the directions. Once you have the codes, you can search on-line for an interpretation of the codes that you get.

As for the idle problem, I wonder if there is a problem with your throttle valve. Intake manifold vacuum places considerable force on the plate, If the pivot point is sticky, worn or if there is carbon build-up, the vacuum force may be wedging it slightly open.

These can be cleaned up. Often, mechanics will remove the throttle body and clean-up the throttle valve and the idle air controller with carb cleaner and a toothbrush, for better idle performance.

The port should be just to the lt or rt of the steering column just under the dash.

Any regular shop will have a high line scanner that can access the codes, or buy one for about 200-250, Actron is one( basic unit).
