Runs great once u get it to start but takes forever to get it to turn over. Started right off with a jump and ran great but if u turn it off and try to start it again it won't start unless u turn the key about 10 times and sometimes not even then. Checked alternator and it's good. Battery is good and battery cables are good. Makes a whirling sound when u turn the key and it won't start. Sounds like it's coming from around the transmission. It makes this whirl sound even when it's running. It used to only make the sound every once in a while. Could this be a flywheel problem?

Re: 89 4.3 L Blazer only turns over after about 7 tries
Need to give your VIN number. The sound you hear. Is it really coming from the trans area or ccould it be coming from the rear end. area Like maybe your gas tank (Fuel Pump).

It's not coming from the gas tank. Before trying to start it today I held the brake down, ran through all the gears, put it in neutral, turned the key, and it started right up. We know it's not the fuel pump. Thought maybe it was loose transfer case bolts but that's not it either.

OK, It sounds like your starter bendex gear is not engaging. You'll need to remove the starter and have it bench tested. I think there are some part shop's that do this. You'll need to ask around. Let us know how you come out.
