87 crx wont idle until warm

ok so this problem started recently
when i go outside in the morning and start the crx up it will not idle until about 3 mins of revving the engine, until it is warm
i have a vacumm leak in my main brake booster, but this problem happened before that ever happened.
i think it might be the timing? but not sure
this only happens after the car in cooled down
anybody have a idea what is wrong?

Re: 87 crx wont idle until warm

I have been searching the net for someone else with this issue. I have an 87 civic sedan that has the 1.5 in it. I just had a major tune up but now I'm playing the role of automatic choke. It takes 3 to 5 minutes before I can get any kind of an idle. Sometimes smooth sometimes not. Someone mentioned the O2 sensor but in my research it doesn't seem to fit the issue. Did you figure anything out? Much appreciated!

First off, are both cars Fuel Injected, or just carb'd?

Forgive my minimal knowledge on the subject but, what does that mean as far as repair?

Re: 87 crx wont idle until warm

well finding out if the choke is bad or good first and then replacing it which isnt that bad. i do have a question are you running a stock vacuum line setup or are you running a devac?

Re: 87 crx wont idle until warm

All stock. I'm not much of a tuner guy. But I had it looked at and had the vacuum hoses checked. Seems to be the block gasket just below the carb. Apparently over time with heat it expands and then contracts when it cools the rubber shrinks allowing air into the lines causing the stalling. Once the car is warm the thing expands back and voila no more stalling until it cools back down and shrinks again. Found an after market for $65. Labor will be about $160. I'll re post after I have the work done to let you know the outcome.

Re: 87 crx wont idle until warm

i have an 84 civic 1.5 and im experiencing the same problem. i would start it up in the mourning and if i didnt give it a little gas it would die. also if i drive it and put the clutch in at a stop sign it dies. it has really become a problem. plus i look like an idiot when im starting up my car at every stop... not cool!!! i replaced the o2 sensor and nothing so dont waste the time... is it possible to replace that gasket by ur self? and what is the name for that gasket if it has one thanks
