Keyless entry won't work (yes, I changed batteries and tried reprogramming).

I need help figuring out why my keyless entry won't work on my 2004 Mazda 6. I changed the batteries in both of my remotes and attempted to reprogram them with the car as outlined on this site, but the car still will not respond to my remotes. Has anyone heard of this problem and if so, do you know how to fix it? I am about ready to shoot the car. Help please. All the dealer wants to do is charge me $90 to reprogam it, which they weren't abe to do 4 months ago anyway.

Have driver's door open.
hit unlock then lock on the driver's door.
Turn the key on/off 3 times.
Open/close driver's door 3 times
Hit any button on key fob
Remove key.
