97 3.1 Power Steering Pulley

I have a 97 Lumina with a 3.1L and I was on my way home from vacation the other day when all of a sudden I lost my power steering on the highway and then the car went immediately hot. I pulled over and noticed the serpentine belt was off so I figured it broke but then I notice the pulley for the power steering pump was completely gone. It had stripped itself and come off. I went to a local parts store and bought a new pulley and had it pressed on. Now my problem is I don't remember exactly how the belt was run and the Auto Zone link that is stickied in this section doesn't have a diagram for the 97 3.1L. Can anyone help me?!?

Thanks
Jay

Re: 97 3.1 Power Steering Pulley

There should be a diagram under the hood on the plastic belt guard between the water pump and p/st pump. I can't find a diagram on line to link for you, so here it goes.

First, to overstate the obvious, if the pulley is grooved, the grooved side of the belt goes toward it, and if smooth, the flat side goes toward it. Starting at the alternator (grooved pulley), going counter-clockwise, the belt will route under the tensioner (smooth pulley, leave it off the tensioner for now) , then to the crank pulley (grooved pulley), straight across to the a/c compressor (grooved pulley), then under the waterpump (smooth pulley), up to the power steering pump (grooved pulley) and straight across to the alternator where you started. Route it around everything but the tensioner, then pull the tensioner back and hook the belt on the tensioner pulley.

Thanks for the response. I looked for the diagram under the hood but it looks like the sticker had peeled off over time. I got the diagram from Chevy today after work. Cars back up and running smooth. Thanks again.
