90 lumina 3.1 Euro. Guages misbehaving.

The speedometer and tachometer guages on my 90 lumina 3.1 are not showing the correct values. The speedo reads about twice what it should and the tach is so far off that anything but bare idle pegs it. Idle shows around 6k rpm. Have swapped the ECU with one from a yard and the problem persists. Aside from the annoyance of doing math to tell what speed I am going, I believe the speed limiter is also kicking in. Just after the speedo pegs out (only around 55-60mph real speed) the motor cuts off until the speedo reads under the 110 mark. Any idea what could cause both these guages to read incorrectly. Does the ECU control the guages directly?

Tony

Check the signal from your VSS (vehicle speed sensor)

Make sure you don't have a fried ground somewhere too.

Just for laughs, hook one end of a jumper cable to the motor and the other end to the Neg battery post, and see what happens. If it corrects it, the engine is ungrounded, and the RPM and VSS signals are corrupt.

JUST FOR LAUGHS ... make your car look like that white low riding POS. It's bad enough that it is a Chevy... but you do have to make it look retarded too !
