98 Lumina Stalling

Ok, now this doesn't happen all the time, but definetly enough to tick me off. But when I'm accelerating, my car will struggle, then kick in, then struggle agian, then kick in again until I hit about 45-50, and sometimes the car just dies and the Volts light comes on. Again, not all the time, but more often in cold weather. I was told that it's my alternator...but that was by the guy that did my oil change who also had the same car and problem. However my alternator is fairly new(October 2005). Any ideas??

Re: 98 Lumina Stalling

The volts light coming on is normal after the car stalls. Do you have any check engine light coming on while driving, or when the car is acting up? If so, have the car scanned and post the results. It sounds like a fuel pressure issue to me, but without more to go on, it's strictly speculation at this point.

Re: 98 Lumina Stalling

One item that will cause the motor to stall is a weak fuel pump. Do you have access to a fuel pressure gauge? You should have above 30 psi at idle and pressure should incease when you take the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator.

Insufficient fuel pressure could be the result of a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. If you are lucky, a fuel filter change might be cheap fix.
