Oil Pan Gaskets

Anyone replace them on a 1999 3.8? It appears you could do it without pulling the engine. Anybody done that? Could you do it by rolling the engine forward? Also What is the tool called and the part number that Snap-On sells to roll the engine forward?

Re: Oil Pan Gaskets

Front mount bracket isd in the way, this has to be unbolted from the block to clear, pain in the ass, the bolts on the rear are hard to access. Leaks huh, just like mine. I stopped a lot of the leaks by reoving the pan bolts and sealing the thead with rtv, must be clean to work though. I can rock the engine forward and use a 2x4 to block the motor to the firewall from the top l/s of the engine.

Thanks. I changed oil tonight and saw that bracket. I have the hoist, the stand and all but FWD seems like a mess. I will take the bolts out one by one and spray carb cleaner on them and in the holes and try the RTV. It's worth a try. I looked at valve covers as well. Seems a big bracket by the coil packs in the way as well. They aren't easy to work on, are they?

Re: Oil Pan Gaskets

They are in that engine compt a little tight, but it is a nice running reasonably quick package. Keep your eye open for the issue with the upper intake going bad and loosing coolant into the engine.

Haven't hadd those problems and I have 110K on it. Really only major problem has been sun roof quit working and I haven't order a replacement from Dr Sunroof yet.

Will watch out for it. Still running DexCool in this and my 04 Avalanche. Haven't seen any problems but I have changed it out a couple of times.
