first oil change

i have a 2004 prerunner it has 2,000 miles on it. i rarely drive the truck. i have had it since june 2004. i know the manual recommends oil changes every 5,000 miles. since it has been about one year and knowing that i wont be putting 5,000 miles on it for awhile, should i change the oil now? When have you guys that bought new trucks changed your oil for the first time?

Re: first oil change

Time is just as critical of a factor for oil life as is mileage, if not more so. I would change the oil every 6 months at least. The first oil change should be a bit sooner than scheduled to get rid of the high wear metals caused by break-in wear. The larger exposed surface uses up the metal-coating additives faster than normal use later in the engine's life.
