Painting that grey plastic....
I have a '95 and its white with the horrendous grey bumpers and etc. Does anybody know how this plastic holds up to primer and spray canning? I dont have enough money to throw down on a real painjob, so I was wondering if color matched DuPont paint and clear coat would look fine. Any brand actually...but Im just wondering if anybodys painted these in general...whether professionally or by yourselves.

Re: Painting that grey plastic....
I'm not sure how well those grey bumpers take paint. Don't they have a rough texture to them? You could probably buy a set of the smooth factory painted ones and re-paint a set of those. More money, I know, but it might be best. Unless someone else has had success painting the grey bumpers?

Re: Painting that grey plastic....
Im thinking if you coated them good with primer and then sanded it a little bit to smooth it even more...it might hold nice.

Cant do it. Well, you can, but it will look really bad. Thats why I just bought the Z24 bumpers and skirts.

Re: Painting that grey plastic....
The door handles look like theyre a different type of surface, a little rougher and easier to paint. Its not glossy like the smooth bumper. I might test it on these since theyre less expensive than if I messed up a bumper...and will probably be a better turnout. That pisses me off though, I get a nice car with only 37k miles and it HAS to be the '95 model with mutant plastics. Idiots...

well what i would do is this:
1- try it your way, remove the bumper, but do it to the inside of the bumper if the inside has the same texture. if not... 2-try resin, resin up the bumper, then sand it down, add enough coats till when you sand it, the grit of the plastic grey bumper cannot be seen, then apply primer, sand that down then paint. voila... let me know how it works out for you. |

Re: Painting that grey plastic....
just finished doing exactly that, my 2003 cavalier silver bumper covers were scratched front and rear
i cleaned them off with de-natured alcohol to remove wax etc, water sanded the scratches only with 350--500--800--and finally 1000 wet dry paper, then i compounded where no scratches were so the blending area would be adheresive i bought the spray can color and clear coat from www.automotivetouchup.com after covering the scratches and blending with the color, then doing the same with the clear it came out very nice after a day or so i sanded the areas where the paint and clear was with 1500 wet finishing paper, then compounded it out for shine and smoothness and i have to wait a month before waxing............ looks great........... good luck..... |
