Cool tried something that i was told that wouldnt work, and it worked!

well we wrapped up the rebuild on the engine and transmission in my brothers 86 trans am. the first time we put the motor in got it running, after the motor got up to temp it would clatter really bad. i thought maybe the rod bearings were the wrong size. this engine is a 5.0 liter
that came out of a 85 camaro. well we had no choice but to pull the engine back out. come to find out the crank was warped. so i had a
crank shaft from a older model 350 in my building. i was told by a mechanic that it wouldnt work. and if i was going to use it to have the block cleareanced ( spelling ) i did it anyway and it did work, perfect
clearance, runs awsome, sounds good too. i had the block bored 30 over,
put a set of hyperutectic silvolite pistons in it. had the heads redone and port polished, and had the transmission redone. the car has all kinds of power, runs like a new one. anyone ever done this????

The 305 and the 350 have the same stroke so why would he say it wouldnt work??

me thinks its time for a new mechanic . the only thing i can think of as to why he would say it wouldnt work is if it was a crank for a 2 piece rear seal or something, but that would have nothing to do with clearancing.

The only reason I could think of that they wouldn't work, a 350 in a 305, is that a 305 crank is different then a 350. The difference is that the counterweights in a 305 are smaller then those on a 350 crank. I would think putting a 350 crank in a 305 would work, but I know for a fact the 305 has smaller counter weights then the 350. I have never dealt with 305 blocks so I wouldn't know about the interchangeability(if that is a word) of the cranks. I just know to stay away from putting 305 cranks into 350s.

I believe that the prick wanted me to pay him to
linebore the block. but i done it all my self.
yes the counter weights are bigger. he is still arguing with me about it too.
