2000 1500 engine code-1740

Hey, has anyone had a problem with a 1740 engine code reoccurring? The code is for the torqe converter clutch or some other transmission problem. I took it to the dealer a few weeks ago and they found a small leak on a transmission cooler line, they tightened the fitting and added fluid they said they tested the TCC and it was good, and that they couldn't find anything else. About a week later I got the same code it clears and comes back a few days(miles) later. The last time it came in I was on the highway traveling downhill at about 60-65 mph and it had already shifted into overdrive.Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem. As time goes on more and more things are starting to happen. If I am on the highway for about half an hour the overdrive turns itself off, then after awhile it turns back on. The tranny is shifting into overdrive but the RPMs are running about 100 to 200 higher than norm.

The problem with the down shifting was a bad thermostat. Noticed the engine was running around 200 to 210. Read from some of the other forums that if the tranny gets hot it will downshift out of overdrive to try and cool itself off, that is exactly what was happening. Just hope it didn't fry anything. Never received a check engine light for overheating, just the 1740.

The deal with the speed sensor makes sense. Will try it out and see what happens.

getting the speed sensor reset to my new tire size didnt do anything for me but set my speedo to my larger tire size, it still isnt shifting properly and my ckeck engine lite just came back on over the weekend, when i check it bet it gives me a 1740 DTC....

Was wondering if anyone else had the same problem. It seem as if no shop knows the remedy for the code. This is the 2nd. tranny in my truck with 38000 miles on it. The 1st one did not have the code, it just quit! This 2nd. one has the code and jumps in an out of overdrive. The boss of all bosses at my shop said that the code is associated with a diesel engine. Mine dosen't have a diesel----We put a co-pilot in it and it has recorded what was going on at the time it was happening. Will call my shop this after noon and see what happens with the co-pilot read out.
Sounds to me like we are all getting the run a round...If it can't be fixed, lets go after Chrysler.

Interestingly...I was searching the web for a custom gas cap cover for my ram and somehow I came upon this site...today I had my 2000 ram in the dealer for the check engine light, which revealed the code 1740.
They told me they would have to replace the tran. pressure boost valve cover plate, and then...they couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't discover yet another problem..blah blah blah...
I hadn't noticed anything different in my truck prior to the light coming on.
Anyways...I didn't know if I should spend 360 bucks for that...If they were being real or what...so...I said...nahhhh...just give me a trans. tune-up..hahha!
...and then I find this forum...
Should I just wait till something breaks?

So, how about that custom gas cap cover? Did you find one? I'm interested in getting one of those, I don't know if they're stainless or chrome or what, or even where you get them...

Umm...I haven't come across any site yet for the gas cap cover/door
still looking, I have seen the chrome ones on cars and a few trucks, I know they are out there...somewhere.

Ihave a 2000 dodge 1500. The transmission had to be replaced at 55,000 miles. The factory installed the lower gears wrong. I complained about trans problems at 15,000 and 30,000 mile check ups. Was told nothing was wrong. At 55,000 miles trans tore itself apart, good thing I had the extende warranty. Has anyone else had a trans problem with 2000 Dodge 1500. I've heard rumors.

Just wondering if anybody knows the solution to the code 1740? My truck goes in and out of overdrive at freeway speeds. All signs seem to be pointing to the trans pressure boost valve cover plate but I hate to replace that if it isn't the problem. Any advice?

My truck is a 2001 2500 4x4.

clerkh: If you have a Dodge Ram, you will have tranny problems, I am confident of that!! - - I have a 02, (46RE Tranny) and took it in prior to my 70K warranty was up for tranny slipping problems was told yes there is a problem we will fix it under warranty.. Took it in for the repair, was then told well, the truck started "bucking and jerking and Check Engine Light came on" you need $600 worth of stuff done before we look at tranny again (Major Tune-up, diff changed, and tranny flush) Don't know why Tranny flush when they were supposed to fix it anyway.. Nevertheless, I done everything else myself, had the flush done.. then the tranny was junk 2 weeks later (which I figured would happen).. Took it back to them to fix under warranty as they said they would even over the 70K since they diagnosed it prior to the 70K.. found out "no can do"... so about $2K later, I have the tranny fixed and suing Chrylser - - - good luck with yours, and keep that ext warranty, or make sure the tranny burns up good before your ext warranty expires!!

There is another thing to check,The bottom transmission line towards the radatior and it is the rubber hose part.There is a plastic checkball in that line and get rid of that checkball.The problem with that checkball is that it melts and will plug the line up resulting in a burned up transmission.Take a long #2 phillips screwdriver and tap that checkball out,no more transmission problems.Do not flush a transmission,my father knows a guy that has his own transmisson shop that loves getting the ones that have been flushed.He cleans the valve bodies out,dirt gets inside the valve body resulting with sticky valves during a flush.The complaint is will not shift and after the valve body cleaning,shifts fine.I had to replace one transmission,it was flushed and acted up right away.

I see that everyone here is showing a 1740 code, i have a similar problem. I have a 98 Ram 2500 with a 5.9. My truck only jumps out of overdrive when i hit a bump on the expressway, it revs up and drops back. I took it to a well known transmission shop and they said no codes and they could not duplicate the problem. It does'nt do it under 55 mph.

My question is could it be a loose connection? or does anyone have any ideas i hate to go to the stealership to get looked at.

Just found out the worst case scenario for my 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 P1740 code. The torque converter starts throwing metal filings that go through the tranny as we found stuck to the magnet. The code is caused by metal going through the TCC solenoid/overdrive solenoid. I had OD cut out on me a few times as well as RPM's not dropping on deceleration. Cost= $2,674 for torque converter and transmission rebuild. DROP THE PAN AND CHECK THAT MAGNET!!! Truck only has 63k on it.
