Window regulator clips have snapped...

My wife's 2000 Alero driver side window started acting up this weekend. It appears that one of the clips (not sure if front or back) had snapped so when the window was going up/down it would tilt one direction or the other. I had a very similar issue on my 96 Vette that was easily fixed by replacing the broken window clip ($200 with labor).

I take the Alero in today and the estimate is $800! The mechanic removed the window from door and showed me the rear clip is snapped and said I need to have a new regulator, new rear clip, and probably a whole new window (even though this one is PERFECT). He claims that there isn't a way to remove a broken clip without destroying the glass so I should just buy a new one. Call me skeptical, but I thing I am getting played.

Has anyone had luck getting just the clip replaced? If so, how do I do that? Will a glass shop be able to assist? I see regulators online for $90 vs. the $150 at GMPARTSDIRECT.

HELP!

Re: Window regulator clips have snapped...

You have to replacec the entire window regulator you can't just by another clip

Re: Re: Window regulator clips have snapped...

I found out you can purchase the window sash clip (attaches with epoxy to the actual window) from GM for $13. Once that is attached to the window, you then bolt the window to the regulator. Found a regulator on eBay for $70 with shipping so just waiting for that to show up.

Thanks to everyone that has replied!!

Re: Window regulator clips have snapped...

Well not sure yet. I purchased the new sash clip from the GM dealership for $13, epoxy for $13 (from 3M at NAPA Auto Parts), and a new regulator unit off eBay for $66 with shipping. I am taking it today to get it installed (I tried but I dont have the patience). The guy at NAPA told me the epoxy is better than what GM used in the first place. I hope he is right.

Bryan, My name is Todd. My girlfriends car has the same problem and the dealer told me they have no part number to order just the clip.A new window they want almost $400.00. I would appreciate if you could email me or send a message back on this site with a part number or a phone number where to order them from.
Thanks Todd.

I have this exact same issue with my girlfriends 2001 Alero. THe clips you're speaking of, are white plastic, correct? If so, I would also like to know where/how you got the clips because my g/f works at a GM dealer and they said there was no such thing.

Thanks!

this happened to me too...
i gotta aftermarket regulator for 75 bucks and 2 clips for 20 bucks through the local junkyard, epoxied them to my window and theyve held up ever since and that was about 2 months ago. just make sure that you pile up the epoxy around the edges and leave ur window sit up over nite. If you do decide to get a new glass go to a local junkyard and usually you can get one for about 75 bucks. I had never done it before and it took maybe 2 hours tops

I have a 2000 GLS Alero 4 door. I've already had the front two window motors replaced under warrenty. Now one of the rear windows is broken. The window won't stay up. When I engage the button you can hear the motor turning but nothing happens. It's like it fell off track or the clips are broken. Currently I have the window taped up. I'd like to fix it myself as now it's not under warrenty. I removed the two screws under the door handle, but I can't figure out how to get the panel off. I've tried pulling up from the bottom but it doesn't want to move.

Any advice on how to get the rear door panel off? Thanks much.

You may have to pull it quite a bit, but it will pop off. Door panels are usually just held on with plastic clips that are slid into a hole in the frame of the door.

As I stated, my girlfriend had a 2001 Alero and there were 3 screws that I had to take off before I could get the panel off, 1 was under the lower light lense in the door, it was red in color, this just pops off if you stick a tiny screwdriver along the sides. Don't pry too hard, you can crack the lense easily. The other 2 were under a small plastic panel just inside the handle of the door that you grab to close the door once you're inside it.

Once the screws were out, I had to pull pretty hard to get it off, but it did come off. Again, you can try a screwdriver or some other prying device you may have. Screwdriver's will scratch.

Re: Window regulator clips have snapped...

Man my driverside window was up all the way and I go to the switch to make it go down and out of now where it just falls down... I took off the door panel and found these white things that were broken. I'm guess it's the clips... I also tried to take off the black clip thats on the window but it's on there pretty good..

Is this what I need?

window regulator clip is 12337848.
