97 Tib question

My son (just turned 16) purchased a 97 with a 1.8 he got this car on the cheap (1000). The motor makes alot of noise on the top end but it runs god though. Are these valves easy to adjust or is this a dealer fix? I ordered a chilton book and should be getting it next week but i thought i would ask on here before i start tearing the motor apart. I also have a question about the power door locks on this car. When the car is started the doors lock and when you shut the key off the unlock. The problem is that when you exit the car with it running and shut the door the car locks the door. Is there a way to program it to stop locking the doors unless it is in gear or not lock the at all?

Re: 97 Tib question

i would cancel the chiltons order if you can. hyundai was kind enough to put a near complete version of their shop manual's online for us. the link is

www.hmaservice.com/webtech

i made up a general UN/PW for anyone that wants to get in but doesnt feel like registering.

username is RDT, and password is Sm9vbw==

the equal sign have to be in it. then you just click service information at the top. spend some time looking through it, its an irreplaceable tool.

how many miles does the motor have on it? the ticking could be a lot of things. could be fixed by a fresh oil change. could also be a bad oil pump. check the troubleshooting tab on webtech. it should shed some more light on your problem.

Re: 97 Tib question

The car has 89000 and the noise appears to be on top. The car has been sitting for a while. I also have a bad altenator and these things are not cheap!!!! I found a place that will rebuild it for 40 bucks though. Thanks for the info so far

Re: 97 Tib question

i would just go to a junkyard for a new alternator. 97-01 tibs, along with the 96-00 elantra will all use the same alternator. i believe the accent might even use that one too.

give it some fresh oil and the ticking will probably go away.

Re: 97 Tib question

sorry i did change oil right away. I told him to just drive it that way to see if it goes away. How about these auto locks I keep getting locked out of the car when i shut the door when the car is running? I now have got used to it and leave door open but i dont wont nick to get locked out somewhere. I think for now i will disconnect the fuse for the locks.

Re: 97 Tib question

i have no idea baout that one. it may have been an aftermarket install from the previous owner, because i have never seen that nor think its possible that something breaking could cause that.

Re: 97 Tib question

well... speaking from experience with a keyless on a 97... they're a pain.. i ended up removing mine totally because of an incident with it. from what i've seen though, that doorlock (anticarjacking as i was told) is a main function of the alarm, depends which system is on there... some units might have jumpers or such to alter the behavior.. the only final suggestion i have is to see if you can find a sensor for one of the doors and disable that, allowing for at least one fo them to remain locked.

Re: 97 Tib question

Well I got all of the above problem fixed. It was not the alt. and the motor ran rough because of a bad o2 sensor. I did not do anything with the locks other then hide a key under it!! I bought him a car alarm remote start with remote door locks so that will fix that as i will just unhook the factory wires into this new unit. (i hope) This is a fun little car and looks nice for a 16 year old. Better then my first car I had rust holes thru the floor in my first car!!! My grandfather wanted to take a ride in it as we where going done the rode we hit a puddle and he got soaked!! That was the last time he rode in any of my cars LOL By the way it was a 72 firebird and i did fix it up eventually and wish i still had it.
