I own a 1991 Honda Accord SE and experiencing this strange problem and hoping I can get some input or possible remedy. I have this flashing "S" on my instrument panel and the speedometer stays on "0" MPH reading at any speed when it happens, then eventually the check engine light follows. Generally, the car starts off normal and this problem only occurs sporadically. Normally the "S" is steady solid when I engaged the sports option on my automatic shifter but in this case, engaged or not, I get the flashing "S". I recently added a security alarm on this vehicle, professionaly installed, and soon after I started getting this problem. I don't know if it's related or it happened by coincidence. I don't think the installer can screw up my instrument panel during the wiring installations, or is that possible? I'm reaching out to anyone out there with Honda expertise to give me a hand. I appreciate any input or suggestions.

ive never had that problem. i too have an AT/w ss, and i had a viper alarm installed with autostart and ignition/fuel-injection cutoff. if yours did too, maybe they messed up the wiring since alot is done under the hood. but either way, COMPLAIN. they obviously messed up your car somehow if it wasnt doing it before. professionally installed means something depending on where you get it done, but even the best might mess up every now and then.

Hi this is Luis, I have a 91 accord also and I also have the "S" flashing and my speedometer also does not work it also stays at "0". I asked about that situation at the honda dealership and they told me that my cruise control does not work. I tried it and I kind of guessd how fast I was going and my cruise control did not pick up. Under your hood if you see the cruise control, "Big round end, (silver) with a long wire running into the body of the car, that most likely would have to be changed. That is something that I also have to do. It can be expensive, the dealership told me that it could be anywhere from $650 to about $1500. I would try going to a honda junk yard or where you can buy honda parts for cheaper, that is what I am going to do. Try it out and let me know. Good Luck to you. Luis '99.

Flashing "S" SOLVED!!!!
Thanks guys for all the support but managed to solve my problem myself by surfing the web. I found this site "Mitchell Buick Honda Bulletin Board" with forums that covers my topic and all other Honda related issues (along w/Buick, of course). The flashing "S" turned out to be the Speed Sensor and I already replaced it. If you guys need the site contact me and I'll also include the site where to get the speed sensor for less and detailed instruction (w/pics) on how to replace it.
Thanks Again!!!!...My Honda is no longer SICK.:sun: Last edited by sickhonda; 06-10-2004 at 08:47 PM. |

I have a sick 93 honda accord which the D4 light flashes and then it will not downshift into 2nd or 3rd gear it will only go from 1st to 4th. I checked the ECU and it says that it is the speed sensor also. Can you send me the link to your information on purchasing it and replacing it?
Thanks a bunch! |

LOwACCORD91 & dabradda, I got you two covered. Hope it helps! epic69 - from the syptoms you describe, sounds like you're experiencing a different problem. You did the ECU test and indicated that its the VSS(Speed Sensor) issue? I took the liberty in checking your post history. You've indicated once that you got an ECU reading of 7 on this particular problem, which refers to throttle angle sensor or circuit. VSS (Speed Sensor) ECU reading should be 17. Make sure you follow the instruction on how to retrieve your ECM codes carefully, and double check your work. I can still give you the info, its your time and money, not mine. I need your email address or change your personal setting to accept email, and I'll be happy to send it. Really hope it helps! I appreciate it if you guys can just update me on the outcome, on this forum. |

:flash: epic69 - Did some more research and found this site that might be a solution to your car issue. Check it out first before replacing your Speed Sensor.

usually the blinking s means an error in atcu in the 90 and 91's. the 92 and 93's will have the d4 flashing if there is an errror in the atcu. just short the blue connector to pull out the codes for the engine, and if there is no error for the engine the d4/s will flash the codes for you. usually a good cleaning of the sensors contacts will take care of the tranny error codes.

I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX:
When accelerating while driving or after a stopping at a stop light or sign, my car hesitates. Once I get to the desired speed the car runs fine. Also my speedometer and odometer aren't working anymore, but occasionally if I drive over 65 MPH it will temporarily work for 5 miles or so. The engine light comes on and the green "S" light flashes after driving about 1/4 mile no matter how fast I drive. I've looked at a site and they say it's a speedomoter chip and it would cost about $175.00 (of course the dealer charges more). Also, it could be caused by a few wires touching each other. Any information would be appreciated. |
