Where in the heck??????

When in the heck do I check for my automatic transmission fluid in my 1999 Grand Am GT??

The dipstick in nowhere to be found.

there is no tranny dipstick.i wondered the same but there is not one.you should not have to add fluid unless there is a leak and take it to a dealer or mechanic for that

My owners manual states "You do not have to add fluid unless there is a leak" I told this to my uncle, who owns an auto body shop. He said, that is why GM has the highest rating for breakdowns.

It's pretty messed up. There is a way to check it but it is a pain in the a**. They have what is called a "Check" plug. On the tranny there is a a small screw in cap that when you have the vehicle level if a bit of fluid drips out this means the tranny's fluid level is fine. If none drips out you have to add fluid through the fill tube until you get the drips. Stupidest thing I've ever seen.

That is by far the most rediculous thing I've ever heard of.
Anyone who owns a grand am GT must pay to have his/her transmission fuild checked??

GM created a real Gem with the GT.

Does anyone know where that little plus is to check how much fluid you have in the trans? I need to check mine I'm almost positive that i'm low on fluid.

It is located just the transmission fluid pan, adjacent the engine oil drain plug. The car has to be completly level and not have been driven at high speeds or in heavy traffic within the last 1/2hr of the fluid level being checked. When you remove the plug, some fluid should drip out indicating proper fluid level. If none drips out, your fluid is low and should slowly be topped up through the fill tube above the transmission until fluid drips out. The funny thing is, although GM has made it a "take it to the dealer to have it checked" thing, in the manual it stresses how important it is to regularly check the fluid level in order to avoid damage to the transaxle. It's a sad and pathetic attempt at increasing revenue.
