I take it you were looking for the engine oil dipstick? That is the only dipstick on the 5 spd.
If you were looking for the manual transaxle gear oil dipstick, you can stop looking: there isn't one. To check your transaxle fluid (which is 75w90 or 80w90, either is fine) you need to use a ratchet to remove the fill plug (square depression plug on the drivers side of the transaxle). Just fill it with gear oil until it starts to run out and you are good. Make sure your car is level. To drain the transaxle fluid, remove the drain plug (another square depression plug on the bottom of the transaxle). I usually take out the fill plug first, then remove the drain plug. It drains faster. Then reinstall the drain plug, fill the transaxle with 1 quart bottle of gear oil (through the fill plug opening) and then reinstall the fill plug. Done.

You need to add more than 1 quart. The manual says it takes 2.5 quarts. I just changed the fluids in mine and it took exactly 2.5 quarts to get it to flow out the fill hole. One of those goose neck things that you screw onto the fluid bottle is well worth the couple dollars it cost. It will save you the hassle of dumping the gear oil every where.

Thanks to you all.
Yes it was for the transaxle. No wonder I couldn't find it. |
