Question Acceleration high-pitched 'whistle' in 2004

Does anyone know what might be causing a high-pitched whistle when the accelerator is either depressed or eased off? It seems to happen around 40-65 mph and is EXTREMELY annoying.

It sounds like a cheap dog whistle.

Thanks,

C2

It could be a variety of things. Are you certain it is based off of road speed and not engine speed? If it's based off of road speed, you are looking either at tire/wheel noise or aerodynamics. If it's engine speed related, I've had instances when an air intake was leaking air in and you heard the whistling. An alternator going south also can whine some. My dad's LaBaron did that at around 2500RPM but you only really noticed it at highway speeds.

The dealership looked at it once and couldn't find anything. We tried to hear it with the vehicle running and in park, but it doesn't seem to happen. The reason I know it's accelerator related is because you can change the pitch of the whistle as you depress or release the accelerator.

I would go to another dealer as there is a TSB on porosity in throttle body creating a whistling noise on light acceleration.

Hey thanks for the tip. I have an appointment with the same dealer next week so I'll bring up the TSB and see what they say.

HILARIOUS

I own a 2004 as well. SAME thing. I just turn up the radio. I notice mine while excelerating or decelerating between 45-70. once you keep the speed constant - the whistle goes away.

where do I find these TSB you speak of?

Hey Bleepster- do you also have "Captain Screechy"? When driving at highway speed, or if the wind is strong, something on the front windshield screeches. I chalked it up to the plastic apron vibrating on the glass, but I cannot find the exact point of vibration. Despite having the dealer put putty between the apron and the glass, the Cap'n still speaks up now and then. Thankfully my wife drives the van most of the time!

My 7-yr old daughter named this sound, so it wouldn't be so annoying. Ha!

I found a listing on www.nhtsa.dot.gov, but it doesn't go into detail. Hopefully the dealer can access it without cost.

Re: Acceleration high-pitched 'whistle' in 2004

no - we have no other issues - other than the whistle. if you do a search on this fourm - other people (different year ventures) have had this screaching. one felle mentioned how he tucked the weather stripping under another peice of weather stripping along where the door meets the windshield pillar. maybe that will help you.

i too found the TSB (on a different site) didnt give any info

Thumbs up Re: Re: Acceleration high-pitched 'whistle' in 2004

Had our van in on Saturday to have the throttle body replaced. Guess what? No more whistle!

Thanks for suggesting the TSB.

I didn't even give them that much info. My wife took it in initially and mentioned a TSB I had found on the web regarding the throttle body. They were skeptical and tried to blame the wind noise from the roof rack, but said they'd order one anyway. They were even skeptical when I took it back. I had removed the roof rack and invited them for a ride, but they declined and proceeded with the throttle body replacement. No charge.

I can't tell you how happy I was when I drove out of the parking lot at hit 40 mph with no whistle!

Good luck. Let me know how you make out with yours.

Carl

I have something similar on my 2004 van. I describe it as a whooping noise. Kind of like the beginning of a police siren. I always thought mine was coming from the rear though and seemed to happen going around corners or slowing down. Could it be the same thing as everyone else? I've tried to notice a pattern but it gets real random. Happens especially on the highway when slowing down.

Sounds like it to me. I'd have it checked out.
