Climate Control Swap

Okay, here's the question...
GM decommissioned the cool electric duel-zoned climate control after 2001 and replaced it with the manual slider. I've seen the electric model in my friend's 2000 GT and was wondering if they can be installed in the 01-03 models. Does anyone know why they made this change? (too many complaints perhaps...) and can a swap be done?
I hear there's a single wiring harness in the back of the electric unit, but I haven't seen the back of the manual unit to see if they're compatible. Can a swap be done without replacing the entire A/C system?
Anyone have any info on this subject?

Re: Climate Control Swap

They discontinued it because it was problematic and way too expensive to repair. Even though it had a cool " show it off to your friends" feel to it, I wouldn't want to retro-fit it, cuz it'll break before you're done with the conversion.
